Mirrored Course Information Learning for Living Academy (LLA) What is a mirrored course? A mirrored course is an Adult & Continuing Education (ACE) course which meets at the same time and place as an existing college credit course. Participation in a mirrored course is based on space available in the class. ACE students enrolled in mirrored courses earn CEU’s, not college credit. What is the advantage? The advantage of a mirrored course is that you do not have to go through the college admissions process. Students taking mirrored courses are not required to take the college entrance TSI Assessment (Texas Success Initiative). What is expected? Students must abide by all rules as published in the TVCC catalog. Students are expected to meet the instructors’ expectations outlined in the course syllabus. Course syllabi are available for review at www.tvcc.edu . What is the cost for a mirrored course? The cost is the same as the cost of the credit course and is calculated with in-district tuition and fees. Adults 60 years of age or older who live in the TVCC tax district can purchase a TVCC GOLD Card. A benefit of the GOLD Card is a reduction in the course cost. For more information about the GOLD Card program, please email conted@tvcc.edu or call 903-675-6212. Can a mirrored course articulate to credit? The ACE mirrored course must be offered as both credit and non-credit following THECB and WECM guidelines. The mirrored course must meet the same rigor, evaluation process, and faculty guidelines as the credit course. ACE students must demonstrate that they have met the same competencies as the successful credit student. Important – If an ACE student is completing a mirrored course as part of a grant program, the student must complete the requirements set forth in the grant before articulation can be considered. Is there a cost to articulate a mirrored course to credit? Yes. A fee is charged per course. Contact the Assistant Vice President of Instruction for details. How do I register for a mirrored course? For registration, payment, or general questions, please contact TVCC’s Adult & Continuing Education department either by email ContEd@tvcc.edu or by phone 903-675-6212.

TVCC conversion of CE/CEU hours to SCH credits Conversion of CE/CEU (continuing education units) hours to SCH (semester credit hours) is only available for those students seeking SCH credit for WECM (Workforce Education Course Manual) courses/programs. TVCC will adhere to the guidelines set forth from the THECB (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board) and the SACSCOC (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges) regarding these conversions. CEU conversions will be fully documented to show that the student has met the same or similar objectives, rigor, course evaluation process and course competencies as those in the equivalent credit course. In addition, faculty qualification standards must be the same as those required in the equivalent credit course(s). Access to this policy will be available only to currently enrolled students or those applicants for the immediately upcoming term who have completed all eligibility requirements of admission to the College and who have met ability to benefit requirements. Step 1: Requests for SCH credit for continuing education (CE) hours or CEU’s will be made to the Division Chair of the appropriate WECM technical program in which the courses reside. Step 2: The Division Chair, along with the instructor of record will review the CE course to match competencies with the THECB and SACS standards through the use of the CE to SCH Evaluation Form. Step 3: If the Division Chair and instructor approve, he/she submits the approved form to the Assistant Vice President of Instruction for review and approval. Step 4: Upon approval by the Assistant Vice President of Instruction, the form is submitted for approval by the Vice President of Instruction. Step 5: Upon VP of Instruction approval, he/she submits the form to the Registrar’s office for processing. Step 6: Students must then pay a fee per Semester Credit Hour (SCH) for the conversion. The fee is non-refundable. Step 7: The Registrar’s office will record awarded SCH credits on the student’s official transcript. Step 8: Students denied SCH conversion may appeal their case before the VP of Instruction whose judgment in each case will be final. Procedure for Conversion of CE/CEU to SCH Credits

A student who audits a course does so for the sole purposes of self- enrichment and academic exploration. • Audit courses carry no academic, credit or non-credit value, do not fulfill degree requirements, and are not eligible for articulation at a later date. • Permission to audit a course entitles the student to attend class. Students do not hand in assignments, take part in discussions, or receive evaluations. • Auditors are permitted only when space is available. An instructor or director may refuse any request to audit a course. • Students must abide by all rules as published in the TVCC catalog.

Netiquette (Internet Etiquette) Netiquette means etiquette on the Internet (or net). In an online course, you will be speaking through written word both to fellow students and instructors, so it is imperative to communicate well and professionally. Mostly, when speaking in an online course, the same rules apply for etiquette as in real-time.
Netiquette Guidelines - I Am TVCC The descriptions will help show how to model the "I AM TVCC" standards in online classes.
I - Interact professionally. Online courses offer flexible working environments, and while you may be alone in your physical place, you are not working alone. The interactions you encounter online are preparing you for a career. How you interact in your online course(s) is a stark reflection of how your will interact in your professional role. Ensure you are interacting professionally by using manners that create a pleasant working culture. Be considerate and polite, in addition ensure your terminology and messages are appropriate for the tone of the conversation. For example, determine if instant message abbreviations are appropriate, or if the conversation requires formal text. Would you a lady wear a ball-gown to a baseball field? Would a man wear slacks to go fishing? Seek to interpret how the people on the receiving end of your communication will interpret you professionally. Using proper language and titles will promote your professional image. Also, do not use caps lock when writing, as it insinuates yelling. A - Ask questions. Cultural influences can influence communication in terms of phrasing and word choice. Before jumping to conclusions, ask for clarification. If you are unsure of what was said, or the instructor's directive, or are trying to interpret a person's expressions, then ask again. Do not sit in silence misunderstanding or feeling offended. The lack of visual and auditory clues may affect meaning, as well. A simple way to ask for clarification is to (or write), "I did not understand...”. Always ask for clarification before jumping to conclusions.
16 | P a g e
M- Make connections. The network you have with classmates in an online course is invaluable. Use tools like your email, discussion forums, etc. to share ideas, ask questions, and participate with your network. Remember, there are appropriate times to have conversational tones in your online courses. Write as if you were in front of the person. As well, be careful with your online postings because once posted, you are not able to get it back. When you press send, the email is sent! Reread your text, reflect on your words, and consider your words from the perspective of the person receiving your message. Always be at least a little cautious in your online interactions, but seek connections with your class network. T- Translate factual information. Deception due to incorrect information is harmful to the learning environment, even if unintentional. As such, you should seek to find reliable sources and provide those sources with your information. Always cite your facts and ensure your statements and opinions are supported by experts in the field. V- Value and respect others. A fellow classmate may not share the same opinion as you when participating in an online activity. You each have the right to disagree with each other, but you do not have the right to allow your disagreement to disrupt the learning process for others. Ensure your disagreements are based on facts, not opinions or personal feelings. As well, express your disagreements with respect and humility. Always reread your posts before publishing to ensure you are not sending and unintended meaning. Most importantly, do not forget there is another human being receiving your messages, not just a computer. C- Clarify communication. Because written text is the main method of communication online, writing clearly to convey the proper meaning of your words is essential. You can lose your tone in writing easily without being clear and concise. When being concise, ensure you are being accurate so that your short text does not convey a misunderstanding. Try to avoid sarcasm, joking, and always be mindful of your chosen words. Most importantly, reread before you respond. Define and restate your words when necessary, and if needed, correct a misunderstanding right away. In addition, your communication should follow standard rules for grammar and spelling. C- Communicate thoughtfully. Be friendly, positive and self-reflective. When people cannot see you, and also do not know you, feelings can be hurt if you are not careful in how you express yourself. The old saying, think before you speak is important here. Think before you write. One word of advice is to not respond when you feel angry. Wait. Write it down somewhere and come back to it. When you do, you may find that you no longer feel the same way as you did when you wrote it, because you have had time to reflect about the situation. Last, if you still feel the need to be heard, then edit before you post, and write it in terms that are easily embraced. When you feel a critique is necessary, say it in a positive tone. Reread what you have written to be sure it is positive. You can help your online community by posing questions, sharing experiences, providing positive feedback, asking follow-up questions, and referring to information sources. Being a positive contributor is better than being a critic, troll or other negative force.
